The story is set in the beautiful, spacious Florida Everglades.
Man, in his quest to build more housing, has created a dangerous encroachment upon the delicate Florida subtropical ecosystem.
The population of Florida panthers and black bears are in serious trouble. Their need for wide roaming spaces and food is
in direct conflict with the development of the increasing human habitat. Yet, the natural instinct of animals to survive is
strong. The two panthers in this story, who begin as strangers, set out on an adventure in a desperate attempt to take them
beyond the control of the humans and back to the safety of the everglades.
Mizpah, a magnificent sandhill crane
informs Felis, a strong Florida male panther, that an unusual thing has occurred in the swamp. A truck is broken down on the
highway known to the animals as the sticky path. Inside the truck, locked in a cage, is Paseo. She is a beautiful female panther.
Felis investigates, for his keen sense of smell stirs an attraction to her scent. His wild animal instinct tells him that
she should be free in the swamp. He draws closer to the truck and risks being captured himself. Finally, the truck is on its
way down the road once more, with Paseo locked captive inside.
Mizpah takes to flight and follows the truck all
night. The next day she returns to tell Felis where he may find the female. The panther notices that the crane is injured.
Her leg is bleeding from an attack of a bulldog. Yet, after a brief rest, the crane and the panther begin their long travel
by nightfall across the swamp.
